Introduction

This book is intended for readers who are already familiar with the basic meanings of the Lenormand cards and have taken their first steps in practice. If you can interpret individual cards but feel uncertain when working with combinations — if two-, three-, or five-card spreads raise questions and leave a sense of incompleteness — then this book is written specifically for you.

One of the main challenges in the Lenormand system is not memorizing card meanings, but learning how to read them in interaction. A single card rarely provides a complete answer. It is combinations that create meaning, direction, and internal logic within a spread. Understanding how the cards «speak» to one another is the key to accurate and practical interpretation.

This book explores in detail combinations of two, three, and five cards — formats that form the foundation of most thematic spreads and serve as the structural basis for reading the Grand Tableau. Particular attention is given not to mechanically listing meanings, but to the very principle of constructing meaning: how one card clarifies, strengthens, modifies, or redirects another, and how the final message of a spread emerges from this interaction.

The book is built upon numerous examples drawn from the author’s personal practice. All interpretations presented here are based on real questions and real-life situations. Different ways of reading the same combinations are examined depending on the topic of the question — whether relationships, finances, career matters, or everyday concerns. This demonstrates how the same pairing of cards can manifest differently depending on context.

The reading algorithm proposed in this book does not claim to be the only correct method. On the contrary, its purpose is to help readers develop their own way of understanding the language of Lenormand.

By mastering this approach, you will not only interpret spreads with greater confidence, but also significantly expand your interpretive vocabulary — learning to articulate meanings in your own words rather than relying solely on memorized keywords.

This book does not aim to replace intuition or impose rigid structures. Instead, it offers a framework within which intuitive perception can function more clearly and reliably. Understanding the principles behind card combinations reduces doubt, minimizes errors, and shifts your practice from guesswork to conscious interpretation.

If you are ready to deepen your understanding of the Lenormand system and learn to truly hear what the cards express when read together, this book will become a practical and reliable tool in your work.

Chapter 1: Tarot and Lenormand — Two Different Approaches

First, it is important to understand that the principle of interpreting card pairs and multi-card combinations in Lenormand differs significantly from the way combinations are read in Tarot.

In Tarot, interpretation begins with the individual cards according to their position in the spread. Every detail of the image may carry meaning: human figures, their posture and facial expressions, clothing, background, color palette, symbols, numbers, plants, and animals. Everything depicted on the card can contribute to the interpretation. Tarot reading is largely built upon working with visual imagery and its subtle nuances.

In the Lenormand system, the structure is much simpler and more direct. Each card carries specific meanings rooted in classical tradition or confirmed through the practitioner’s personal experience. The emphasis is not placed on artistic details, but on the object shown on the card and its function in real life.

Lenormand does not attach the same importance to illustrative elements. For example, it is not essential whether the Tree card shows fruit, just as the breed of the dog on the Dog card is irrelevant. The card conveys the generalized qualities of the object itself. When we see the Birds card, we think of real birds — their restlessness, constant movement, and chatter — which in everyday life correspond to nervousness, conversations, errands, and minor stress. The Ring card, in turn, immediately speaks of commitment, agreement, or union between two people.

In some cases, readers may consider the direction of movement or the gaze of figures on a card. However, this belongs more to an individual reading style and is not a mandatory rule of the system.

Despite its apparent simplicity, Lenormand is capable of conveying a substantial amount of information — no less than Tarot. It is particularly effective when addressing everyday, practical questions, which are the ones clients most often bring.

Therefore, if you practice Tarot and decide to work with a Lenormand deck, it is important to consciously set aside the Tarot mindset. The principles of working with this oracle are different — from the way the deck is shuffled, to the layout of the cards, and most importantly, to the method of reading combinations. Lenormand requires a different mode of thinking: more direct, concrete, and focused on real-life situations.

Chapter 2: The Importance of Combinations

A meaningful dialogue with the Lenormand cards is built through combinations. In this system, a combination refers to any spread that contains more than one card. A single card, taken on its own, represents only a fragment of an answer and is rarely sufficient when addressing a significant question. In certain situations, relying on just one card may even lead to a fundamentally misleading conclusion.

Consider a simple example. A client asks whether a particular matter will have a favorable outcome. You draw the Bouquet card. Joy, success, a pleasant result — everything appears encouraging. Yet some time later, the client returns disappointed, explaining that events unfolded in a highly unfavorable way. The natural question arises: where did the error occur?

The error was not in the card, but in the method. The cards were not given the opportunity to complete their message. If another card had appeared next to Bouquet — for instance, Coffin — the interpretation would have shifted dramatically. The combination Bouquet + Coffin no longer promises success; instead, it suggests fading joy, disappointment, or the end of expectations. This illustrates a fundamental principle of Lenormand: meaning does not reside in isolated symbols, but in their interaction.

Lenormand cards speak through combinations. Their language is one of connections, progression, clarification, and modification. Most commonly, readers work with combinations of two, three, five, seven, or nine cards. Larger spreads certainly exist, but in this book we will concentrate on these foundational formats.

The ability to read combinations forms the foundation of all thematic spreads and, in particular, of the Grand Tableau. At the heart of this skill lies the capacity to interpret pairs and triads. The choice of format ultimately depends on personal preference and individual reading style.

Card pairs are often used when a brief and focused answer is needed. For many years, I relied heavily on pairs when responding to quick-fire questions — situations in which a client poses several short questions in succession and expects immediate clarity. Two cards can provide a concise and efficient response.

Over time, however, I developed not only a logical understanding but also an inner awareness that even two cards can sometimes leave something unresolved — as if the narrative ends prematurely. There can be a subtle sense that an essential nuance is missing. For this reason, in most cases I began drawing a third card — to clarify the situation, establish emphasis, and bring the message to a coherent conclusion. Nevertheless, mastering pairs alone already allows you to navigate many everyday situations with confidence.

A triad offers a more comprehensive and balanced format. It demands slightly greater concentration and experience, yet it provides increased depth and precision. With sufficient practice, three cards can even be used to obtain clear «yes» or «no» answers, as a triad reveals not only the event itself but also its surrounding context and dynamics.

A five-card spread may initially appear more complex. In reality, it primarily requires the ability to connect individual images into a unified narrative. With experience and sensitivity, five cards can unfold an entire fragment of the querent’s life — like a short film or a sequence of meaningful scenes. The practitioner’s role is not to invent a story, but to describe accurately and clearly what the cards are already presenting.

Ultimately, the central task is not memorizing isolated meanings or mechanically applying fixed formulas. The true objective is to understand the underlying principle by which combinations function — the inner logic through which the cards construct their message. It is this principle that the following chapters will explore in detail.

It is also important to remember that there is no single universally correct method for reading combinations. Different practitioners employ different approaches, and over time each reader develops a personal style. What matters most is that you understand the language of the Lenormand cards — the way they communicate with you. Whether you build this dialogue through pairs, triads, or more complex structures remains your own choice.

And now, let us turn to the practical study of combinations.

Chapter 3: How to Read Card Pairs

Although each card in the Lenormand system has its own independent meaning, this alone is not enough in practical divination. To obtain a complete and meaningful answer, one must learn to combine the meanings of two cards into a single coherent statement. The ability to read card pairs is a foundational skill, without which further work with Lenormand is not possible.

Working with pairs allows the reader to move from isolated symbols to a holistic understanding of a situation. This process requires not only knowledge of individual card meanings, but also the ability to connect them according to the context of the question. There is also a spiritual and psychological dimension to divination that influences interpretation. However, within the scope of this chapter, I will deliberately set that aspect aside and return to it later.

The Order of Reading in a Pair

Lenormand cards are read from left to right, and the order in which they appear in a pair is of fundamental importance. It is essential to pay attention to which card appears first and which follows. In many cases, simply reversing the positions of the same two cards completely changes the meaning of the answer.

Card pairs can be interpreted in at least two primary ways. I refer to the first as the descriptive method and the second as the intuitive method. For beginners, I recommend starting with the descriptive approach, as it is clearer, more structured, and helps establish a solid understanding of the basic logic behind pair interpretation. The intuitive method requires greater experience and a deeper familiarity with the system, and is therefore best explored at a later stage.

Descriptive Method

The basic rule of the descriptive method is simple: the first card sets the theme of the statement — what or whom the combination is about — while the second card clarifies and describes that theme. In other words, the first card represents the semantic object, and the second shows in what form, quality, or context it manifests.

For convenience, I suggest mentally performing a small «grammatical» transformation of the key words. It is important to understand that this is not about strict grammatical parts of speech, but rather about their function within the statement.

The first card answers the questions «Who?» or «What?» and indicates the theme — the subject of the combination. For this reason, its key meanings are most conveniently perceived in the form of nouns. If the key word of the first card originally appears as an adjective, it should be mentally transformed into the corresponding noun.

For example: «dangerous» → danger; «active» → activity; «strong» → strength.

Example:

Let us consider the Child card as an example, with its basic meanings: child, small, new, innocent. Of these words, only child directly answers the question «Who?». The other meanings are easier to interpret as nouns that reflect the essence of the card: «small» → smallness; «new» → novelty; «innocent» → innocence.

The second card in the descriptive method performs a clarifying and descriptive function. It answers questions such as «What kind?» «Where?» «How?» — in other words, it shows how, under what conditions, or in what context the theme indicated by the first card manifests. Depending on the situation, the meanings of the second card may sound like adjectives, adverbial descriptions, or short explanatory phrases.

For example, if the key meaning of the second card is connected with money, it may be expressed as «financial»; if it relates to home, as «domestic»; if it refers to a road, it may be rendered as «on the way» or «travel-related». The important point here is not to select a formally «correct» grammatical form, but to aim for semantic precision.

Working with the pair then becomes a simple process: you take the theme indicated by the first card and mentally supplement it with the characteristic provided by the second card, forming a coherent and meaningful statement. With practice, this process becomes natural and eventually requires little conscious effort.

To make the descriptive method clearer and easier to apply in practice, let us examine it step by step using concrete examples. Below is a simple algorithm that can be used as a training exercise, illustrated by the combination Man + Anchor (Fig. 1).

Example No. 1

Fig. 1. Combination: Man + Anchor

Begin with the first card and determine who or what the combination refers to.

Step 1. Identify the subject

The first card is Man, which answers the question «Who?» The subject of the combination is therefore a man.

Step 2. Add the description

Now turn to the second card and select one of its key meanings. For the Anchor card, one possible meaning is achievement of a goal.

Combine the cards:

Man — a man who achieves his goals.

Interpretation: This combination indicates a goal-oriented man who is accustomed to achieving the objectives he sets for himself.

Another meaning of the Anchor card

Let us now take another key meaning of the Anchor card — stability.

Combine the cards:

Man — a stable man.

Interpretation: This man is reliable, steady, and consistent. He is not inclined to change his decisions, views, or behavior abruptly. He is someone you can rely on.

Another possible meaning

Now take another key meaning of the Anchor card — willpower.

Combine the cards:

Man — a strong-willed man.

Interpretation: This refers to a person with strong determination, someone persistent and resolute in his intentions and actions.

Expanding the interpretation

At this point, the interpretation can be expanded by considering other possible meanings of the first card.

For example, the Man card may represent not only a specific person but also a meeting with a man. In this case, the interpretation shifts to the context of a particular situation.

Subject: A meeting with a man.

Description: A meeting with a goal-oriented, stable, or strong-willed man — or even with a man who himself becomes your goal.

By using imagination and asking clarifying questions, it is possible to obtain a fuller and more nuanced description of the situation.

General meaning of the combination

In a broader sense, the combination Man + Anchor may be interpreted as follows:

This combination speaks of a strong-willed and goal-oriented man. He is calm, stable, and self-confident, not prone to sudden changes, and tends to follow a consistent course of action. This is a person you can rely on.

If the question concerns a meeting or acquaintance, the cards may indicate that this is exactly the type of man you are likely to encounter.

Important note

Sometimes, due to the nature of language, it is not possible to transform the meaning of the second card directly into a single descriptive word and connect it smoothly with the first card.

In such cases, there is no need to force a single definition. It is often more accurate to describe the first card using short phrases or explanatory expressions that convey the essence of the combination clearly and naturally.

Example No. 2

Fig. 2. Combination: Man + Key

We begin by asking the main question of the first card (Fig. 2): «What kind of man?»

The answer may not be limited to a single word, but can take the form of a meaningful description: significant, successful, a key figure, someone capable of solving problems, a person with access to important information, or one who holds certain secrets.

In this case, the Key card is not reduced to a simple adjective. It refines the man’s role and significance, emphasizing his importance, influence, or special status.

Now let us switch the cards and observe how the meaning changes (Fig. 3).

Fig. 3. Combination Key + Man

The first card is the Key, so we begin with the question: «What?»

Answer: a solution to a problem, an important matter, the discovery of an answer.

Next, we clarify: «What or whom is this connected with?»

Answer: with a man.

As a result, the combination is interpreted differently. It no longer describes the man’s characteristics, but instead points to an important issue or a significant matter connected with a specific man, or one that directly concerns the querent.

This example clearly demonstrates how significantly the interpretation changes when the order of the cards is reversed. In the first case, we describe the person; in the second, we describe the essence of the situation associated with him. This is why the order of cards in a pair combination is crucial and must always be taken into account in interpretation.

Example No. 3

Fig. 4. Combination Coffin + Dog

Let us consider another example (Fig. 4) and once again recall the core meanings of each card individually.

— The Coffin card usually indicates illness, absence, endings, decline, or the cessation of something.

— The Dog card symbolizes a friend, an acquaintance, help, support, and in some cases may also refer to an actual dog.

Now let us try to combine the meanings of these cards using the descriptive method. First, we ask a question about the first card:

Question: «What?»

Answer: illness (Coffin).

Then we clarify the meaning using the second card and ask the next question:

Question: «What kind of illness?»

Answer: «friendly» (Dog).

Obviously, in natural speech we do not use the expression «friendly illness.» Therefore, at this stage it is important not to fixate on the literal wording, but to perform a semantic transformation. After this transformation, it becomes clear that the combination Coffin + Dog may indicate:

• illness of a friend

• deterioration in the condition of an acquaintance

• or illness of a pet, particularly a dog

Thus, in this pair, the first card sets the theme — illness — while the second clarifies whom or what it concerns. This is a simple but illustrative example of how the descriptive method helps move from formal wording to a clear and practical interpretation.

Now let us switch the cards (Fig. 5).

Fig. 5. Combination Dog + Coffin

Again, we begin with the first card and ask:

Question: «What?»

Answer: friendship (Dog).

Next, we clarify the meaning using the second card:

Question: «What kind?»

Answer: empty, unhealthy, or ended (Coffin).

After semantic transformation, it becomes clear that the combination Dog + Coffin may indicate:

• the end of a friendship

• a complete absence of friendly relations

• or the possible loss of a friend or a pet

However, the interpretation does not end there. Depending on the context of the question and the querent’s situation, the cards may also point to an unhealthy or toxic friendship that is already causing discomfort or may lead to problems in the future. Such a connection may feel burdensome, create inner tension, or give the sense that the relationship has run its course and has no future.

Additionally, since the Dog card symbolizes not only friendship but also help, support, and compassion, this combination may indicate a situation where one should not rely on help or support — either because it has already ceased or because it was illusory from the beginning.

This example clearly demonstrates how significantly the interpretation changes when the order of the cards is reversed. In the previous combination, we were speaking about an illness or problem connected with a friend, whereas here the focus shifts to the condition of the friendship itself. This is why the order of cards in pair combinations is fundamentally important and must always be taken into account during interpretation.

Example No. 4

Fig. 6. Combination Woman + Book

Let us consider another example to reinforce the principle of the descriptive method. We begin with the first card and ask the main question:

Question: «Who?»

Answer: a woman.

We then move to the second card and ask a clarifying question:

Question: «What kind of woman?»

Answer: unknown, educated, well-read, curious; a woman connected with learning or the transmission of knowledge.

In this combination (Fig. 6), the Book card describes the woman through her level of knowledge and degree of openness. As a result, we obtain the image of an unknown or little-known woman who possesses knowledge, shows an interest in learning, or may herself act as a teacher.

Thus, in the combination Woman + Book, the main focus is on the characteristics of the woman herself rather than on the situation surrounding her. The first card establishes the figure, while the second refines her qualities and traits.

Now let us switch the cards (Fig. 7).

Fig. 7. Combination Book + Woman

We begin with the first card and ask the main question:

Question: «What?»

Answer: a secret (Book).

Next, we clarify the meaning using the second card and ask the following question:

Question: «What kind of secret?»

Answer: related to a woman.

Based on this, we can conclude that this combination refers to a secret connected with a woman. It may indicate that a woman is hiding something, withholding information, or is not ready to reveal everything. Depending on the context of the question, the combination may also point to hidden intentions, personal matters, or knowledge that the woman does not openly share.

This example once again clearly demonstrates how changing the order of the cards alters the meaning of the interpretation. In the previous case, we described the woman herself and her qualities, whereas here the focus shifts to the secret and the person connected to it. That is why, when reading pair combinations, it is always important to take the order of the cards into account.

Example No. 5

Fig. 8. Combination House + Mice

We begin with the first card and ask the main question (Fig. 8):

Question: «What?»

Answer: the home.

We then move to the second card and ask a clarifying question:

Question: «What kind of home?»

Answer: one that is being worn down, losing stability, or creating anxiety (Mice).

After applying semantic transformation, we can conclude that the combination House + Mice may indicate (depending on the context):

• an unstable home environment

• small but persistent problems within the family or daily life

• a gradual drain of resources, energy, or finances related to the home

• a sense of anxiety or discomfort in one’s living space

In this combination, the first card sets the theme — the home, family, and a sense of security — while the second shows that this area is being gradually undermined or affected by ongoing, draining tension.

Now let us switch the cards (Fig. 9).

Fig. 9. Combination Mice + House

We begin with the first card and ask:

Question: «What?»

Answer: loss, anxiety, or a draining situation (Mice).

Next, we clarify the meaning using the second card and ask the following question:

Question: «Where are the losses occurring?»

Answer: in the home, within the family, or in one’s sense of security (House).

After combining the meanings, it becomes clear that the combination Mice + House primarily indicates:

• losses related to the home or family

• a drain of resources within the domestic sphere

• anxiety caused by everyday or family-related circumstances

• a situation in which the sense of stability is undermined by specific problems at home

Here, the emphasis shifts from the condition of the home itself to the problem or loss occurring within the sphere of home and family.

Example No. 6

Fig. 10. Combination Heart + Cross

We begin with the first card.

Question: «What?»

Answer: feelings, love, emotional attachment (Heart).

We then move to the second card and ask a clarifying question:

Question: «What kind of feelings?»

Answer: heavy, painful, connected with trials or suffering (Cross).

After applying semantic transformation, it becomes clear that the combination Heart + Cross may indicate:

• heavy or painful feelings

• emotional experiences connected with loss or hardship

• love that brings suffering

• a strong emotional attachment going through a difficult period

In this combination, the first card sets the theme — feelings and love — while the second shows that this area is burdened by pain, hardship, or the need to go through a trial.

Fig. 11. Combination Cross + Heart

We begin with the first card:

Question: «What?»

Answer: a trial, a difficult period, a burden, or a fated situation (Cross).

Next, we clarify the meaning using the second card and ask the following question:

Question: «In which area does this trial occur?»

Answer: in the realm of feelings, love, and emotional attachments (Heart).

After combining the meanings, it becomes clear that the combination Cross + Heart primarily indicates:

• a fated test in matters of love

• a difficult emotional experience

• the need to go through an emotionally challenging period

• a situation in which feelings play a key role in what is unfolding

Here, the main emphasis shifts from the feelings themselves to the trial taking place within the emotional sphere.

This example once again shows that when the order of the cards is reversed, it is not just the nuance that changes, but the very center of meaning within the combination. In one case, we describe the feelings; in the other, the trial connected with those feelings.

Example No. 7

Fig. 12. Combination House + Garden

Question: «What?»

Answer: the home, a building, or a place of residence (House).

We then move to the second card and ask a clarifying question:

Question: «What kind of home?»

Answer: one located in a beautiful setting, surrounded by abundance, or situated near a garden or forest (Garden).

After applying semantic transformation, the combination House + Garden may indicate:

• a home located in a beautiful, well-kept, or natural setting

• a residence surrounded by greenery, a garden, or a forest

• a comfortable and pleasant living environment

• a place where there is a sense of space, beauty, and abundance

In this combination, the first card sets the theme — the home as a place of residence — while the second clarifies the conditions and surroundings of that home.

Now let us switch the cards (Fig. 13).

Fig. 13. Combination Garden + House

Question: «What?»

Answer: a beautiful place, abundance, a space for relaxation or leisure, a garden or forest (Garden).

Next, we clarify the meaning using the second card and ask the following question:

Question: «Where?»

Answer: at home, near the home, or on the property (House).

After combining the meanings, it becomes clear that the combination Garden + House primarily indicates:

• a beautiful place located at or near the home (for example, a winter garden)

• a garden, yard, or green area near the residence

• a space for relaxation or socializing within the home environment

• abundance and beauty concentrated specifically in the domestic sphere

Here, the emphasis shifts from the house itself to the surrounding space connected to it.

In the examples presented in this book, the basic keyword meanings of the cards are used as the foundation for interpretation. These meanings serve as a starting point for learning and are essential for understanding how combinations are read. However, for confident and in-depth work with Lenormand, it is important not to rely on them alone.

Those who wish to gain a deeper understanding of each card — its essence, origins, and underlying layers of meaning — are encouraged to study additional theoretical materials devoted to individual card meanings. The better you understand each card on its own, the easier and more precise your interpretation of combinations will become.

Be sure to build your own «vocabulary.» Study the work of different authors, compare approaches, and read articles and practical analyses related to the Lenormand system. This will help you see the cards from different perspectives and expand your range of possible interpretations.

Over time, as you apply your knowledge in practice, you will naturally retain only those meanings that truly work for you. Meanings that do not resonate or are not confirmed in practice will gradually fall away. This is a natural and important stage in developing your personal reading style.

To make the learning process easier, it is helpful to create a working template similar to the one shown in Fig. 14 and fill it out regularly. It is recommended to work through the entire deck systematically, starting with the first card and combining it with each of the others in turn. For example, begin with the first card and read the pairs: first + second, first + third, first + fourth, and so on.

It is also useful to read the pairs in reverse order. After interpreting one combination, switch the cards and read the new pair again. This approach allows you to clearly see how the meaning changes depending on the order of the cards.

At the initial stage, I recommend writing down everything that comes to mind, including any associations and possible interpretations, even if they seem unusual or awkward. These notes will help you develop your own approach to reading combinations. Once you have worked through the entire deck «forward and backward,» that is, explored all possible pair combinations, you can move on to studying the intuitive method of reading.

For those who, for any reason, cannot or do not wish to do this work independently, there are already basic lists of pair meanings available that can serve as supplementary material for learning the descriptive method. However, it is important to remember that such lists provide only a general foundation and do not take into account the specifics of particular questions or contexts.

Fig. 14 Pair reading template

The Intuitive Method

The descriptive method discussed earlier is recommended as the primary approach at the initial stage of learning. It helps build the right way of thinking and teaches you how to combine card meanings into coherent interpretations. However, as practical experience accumulates, most people naturally begin to feel the desire to read pair combinations as a whole, without breaking them down step by step.

At this stage, there is no longer a need to strictly follow the rule that the first card is described through the meanings of the second. Instead, you begin to perceive the combination as a single, unified whole. A single glance at the cards is often enough to understand what they are saying. This way of reading is what I call the intuitive method.

The intuitive method opens up greater possibilities, as it allows you to give more detailed, natural, and precise answers. At the same time, it is important to understand that it does not replace knowledge of card meanings or practical experience. On the contrary, it is built upon them. To read combinations intuitively with confidence, you must have a solid understanding of each card and sufficient experience working with spreads.

Let us look at a few simple real-life examples.

Example No. 1

An acquaintance of mine was given a strict medical prohibition against alcohol due to his health condition. As often happens, once his condition improved, the desire to return to old habits came back. One day, he asked me to consult the Lenormand cards to see whether he could at least have a single bottle of beer. I took it with a smile, but out of curiosity agreed and laid out the cards. The following combination appeared (Fig. 15).

Fig. 15 Combination Man + Tower

In this case, the Man card not only pointed to the person himself, but also confirmed that the question was personal and of serious importance to him. The Tower card gave a clear and meaningful answer. It is associated with concepts such as restriction, responsibility, independence, isolation, as well as strict boundaries and prohibitions.

Additionally, the Tower can indicate a hospital or medical institution. In the context of this question, that meaning also came across as a possible warning: violating these restrictions could lead to a relapse and the need for medical intervention.

My response to him was as follows:

«Your question about alcohol is truly important, and you should take it seriously. The best course for you is to stay away from alcohol. First, the decision whether to drink or not is entirely yours. Second, the responsibility for the consequences lies solely with you. Third, if you still decide to drink, you must strictly limit the amount — no more than one bottle.»

As you can see, in this case I did not apply any formal method or break the cards down step by step. I simply looked at the combination and read it as a whole, taking into account the different possible meanings of the cards and the overall context of the question.

Example No. 2

Question. Dark clouds were gathering in the sky, and the air carried the sense of an approaching storm. I had a fairly long walk ahead of me, and rain would have been highly undesirable. As I usually do in such situations, I laid out the cards and asked: what will the weather be like over the next six hours — will it start to rain, or will it pass by?

Fig. 16 Combination Man + Dog

Answer. The first card (Fig. 16) — the Man — clearly pointed to me and confirmed that the question was indeed about the querent, that is, myself.

The second card — the Dog — conveyed a sense of calm and protection. Its core meanings — friendship, help, support, safety, and reliability — in this context suggested: «the situation will be favorable; you can proceed without concern.»

Thus, this combination indicated that, over the next six hours, rain was unlikely and the conditions would remain calm. Shortly afterward, the storm clouds did indeed pass by, and the sun reappeared.

This example clearly shows how, in the intuitive method, it is often enough to align the meanings of two cards with the context of the question — and to trust the first clear impression that emerges from the combination.

Example No. 3

However, combinations are not always read so easily. Sometimes the meanings of the cards are clear, yet it is more difficult to relate them to the client’s specific question and to select, from all possible meanings, those that truly apply to the situation.

Let us consider a familiar combination — Man + Anchor — but this time in the context of romantic relationships (Fig. 17). Here it is especially important to remember that the same card can take on different roles depending on the question.

Fig. 17 Combination Man + Anchor

In relationship readings, the Man card may represent a partner, a husband, a lover, or simply a man being referred to. The first step is to clarify who exactly is meant.

If the card refers to a lover, the Anchor often indicates a strong attachment: the man is «holding on» to the relationship, unwilling to let go, seeking to secure and stabilize the connection. In this case, the woman can expect continuity and stability in the relationship.

If, however, the card refers to a husband, two different shades of interpretation are possible. On the one hand, the Anchor can signify reliability, loyalty, security, and stability. On the other hand, it is also associated with stagnation, a lack of movement, and the absence of renewal.

If a client asks why her marriage has stopped bringing joy, this combination may indicate that the relationship has become too habitual, almost «rusted»: outwardly everything appears stable, the partner is reliable, and there are no obvious problems or infidelities — yet the sense of vitality, freshness, and emotional warmth has diminished.

Exercises

Exercise No. 1

In this exercise, I invite you to practice reading paired combinations using the descriptive method. First, try to give your own answers to each question, and then compare them with the suggested interpretations. Do not limit yourself to a single answer — the broader the range of meanings you are able to see, the better.

1. «Man» + «Coffin»

Question: What is wrong with this man?

Possible answers: The man may be ill; experiencing emotional emptiness or a lack of feelings; going through depression; dealing with strong fears; or feeling a loss of energy. In some cases, the combination may indicate issues with potency, infertility, or a general sense of being at a dead end in life.

2. «Man» + «Bouquet»

Question: What are this man’s intentions?

Possible answers: He wants to please, to offer a pleasant surprise or a gift; he seeks to create positive emotions. He may invite someone to meet, give flowers, express affection or love, or congratulate someone on an important occasion.

3. «Man» + «Ship»

Question: What is this man’s profession?

Possible answers: He may be a sailor, pilot, truck driver, businessman, or work in tourism. He may be employed by a foreign company or be involved in activities related to travel, relocation, or international trade.

4. «Man» + «Mice»

Question: Describe this man in as much detail as possible.

Possible answers: The man is anxious, nervous, and prone to worrying about small things; he may be timid, insecure, or unpleasant in communication. In some cases, the combination may indicate greed, untidiness, inner exhaustion, or a feeling that he is «consumed» by problems.

5. «Man» + «Moon»

Question: What emotional states does this man experience?

Possible answers: He is emotional, sensitive, and prone to inner inner tension (emotional strain or deep personal concerns); he may suffer from mood swings, insomnia, fears, or depressive states. In a positive expression, he may be romantic, dreamy, and creative, with a rich inner world.

6. «Man» + «Snake»

Question: What are this man’s motives?

Possible answers: He acts cunningly and strategically; his intentions may be hidden or self-serving. There may be manipulation, jealousy, intrigue, or a desire to gain advantage at the expense of others.

7. «Man» + «Book»

Question: What is this man hiding?

Possible answers: He is hiding information or knowledge; he has secrets he does not reveal. He may be a reserved, mysterious person, studying something important or engaged in an activity he prefers not to disclose.

8. «Man» + «Tower»

Question: What are his life principles?

Possible answers: He strives for independence and self-sufficiency; he may hold a high position or possess authority. Often, he is strict and responsible, inclined toward distance and solitude, preferring to maintain clear boundaries.

9. «Man» + «Scythe»

Question: What actions is this man about to take?

Possible answers: He is ready for sharp, decisive action; a breakup, the end of a phase, or sudden changes are possible. He may be determined to «cut off» what is no longer needed and act without delay.

10. «Man» + «Fish»

12. «Man» + «Fox»

Question: Why can’t this man be trusted?

Possible answers: He may be insincere, prone to deception or manipulation. His actions may be driven by personal gain or hidden motives.

13. «Man» + «Cross»

Question: What important events are happening in his life?

Possible answers: He is going through a difficult period; facing serious trials or carrying a heavy burden of responsibility. Fateful events and difficult decisions are likely.

14. «Man» + «Dog»

Question: What is this man’s character?

Possible answers: He is reliable, loyal, and honest; he may be a good friend or a devoted partner. He is inclined toward support, care, and sincere relationships.

15. «Man» + «Tree»

Question: What is his state of health?

Possible answers: He has good health potential but needs to take care of himself. There may be hereditary factors, or this may indicate long-term recovery processes. Without a third card, it is difficult to be more precise.

16. «Man» + «Stars»

Question: What are his dreams and goals?

Possible answers: He is making plans for the future, setting high goals, and holding great hopes. He may be truly inspired, optimistic, and oriented toward growth. There may also be a tendency toward idealism or perfectionism.

17. «Man» + «Key»

Question: Does this man avoid problems?

Possible answers: No. He is used to making important decisions, finding solutions to difficult situations, and opening new opportunities. He acts confidently and with awareness.

18. «Man» + «Sun»

Question: How successful is this man?

Possible answers: He is very successful, confident, and capable of achieving his goals. He may be charismatic and stand out to others.

19. «Man» + «House»

Question: What is truly important to him?

Possible answers: He values home, family, stability, and a sense of security. Traditions, comfort, and a solid foundation in life are important to him.

20. «Man» + «Ring»

Question: What is his situation in relationships?

Possible answers: He may be married or striving for a serious and stable relationship. He is ready for commitment, partnership, and agreements.

These examples demonstrate how multilayered the information from a single pair combination can be, and how the combination of logic and intuition allows for a deeper understanding of a person or situation. If your answers are close to the suggested interpretations, it means you are moving in the right direction. Proceed to the next exercise.

Exercise No. 2

This exercise is designed to develop your ability to read pairs without relying on significator cards, as well as to understand how the meaning of a combination changes when the order of the cards is reversed. For each pair, first read the combination in its direct order, and then in reverse. Pay attention to what becomes primary in each case.

1. «House» + «Scythe»

Question: What is the possible outcome?

Possible answers: Sudden changes in the home or family; an abrupt end to a stable phase; the need to urgently resolve a critical issue related to housing, family, or security.

1.1. «Scythe» + «House»

Question: In which area will a sudden event occur?

Possible answers: An unexpected situation or conflict affecting the home, family, or place of residence; a sudden disruption connected to domestic circumstances.

2. «Fish» + «Mice»

Question: What is happening with the financial situation?

Possible answers: A loss or leakage of money; small but persistent financial losses; anxiety caused by unstable income.

2.1. «Mice» + «Fish»

Question: What is currently causing concern?

Possible answers: The person is worried specifically about finances; fears and anxiety related to money; a feeling that money is «slipping through their fingers.»

3. «Letter» + «Book»

Question: What kind of information is this?

Possible answers: A hidden message; a letter with a concealed meaning; information that has not yet been fully revealed.

3.1. «Book» + «Letter»

Question: How is the secret revealed?

Possible answers: The secret becomes known through a message; receiving a letter that clarifies the situation; information coming to light.

4. «Crossroads» + «Coffin»

Question: Should I look for another job right now?

Possible answers: In this combination, the cards suggest that it is not the right time to make a decision or take active steps. Any attempts to choose or search for alternatives are likely to lead to a dead end and produce no result. This is not the right moment for such decisions — it is better to wait out this period.

4.1. «Coffin» + «Crossroads»

Question: What should I do about my current job?

Possible answers: The career situation has reached a dead end — there is no movement and no development is expected. The current job resembles a stagnant situation where further progress is impossible. In this case, it makes sense to begin considering alternatives and exploring other options.

5. «Ring» + «Fox»

Question: What kind of commitments or relationships are these?

Possible answers: Dishonest agreements; a union with hidden motives; commitments involving concealed personal gain.

5.1. «Fox» + «Ring»

Question: Where does deception or cunning manifest?

Possible answers: Manipulation within an agreement; deception in relationships; self-interest hidden behind promises.

6. «Sun» + «Clouds»

Question: How will the situation develop?

Possible answers: Temporary doubts against a background of success; joy overshadowed by uncertainty; the situation will clear up, but not immediately.

6.1. «Clouds» + «Sun»

Question: What is happening with the theme of uncertainty?

Possible answers: Doubts begin to disperse; clarity comes after a period of uncertainty; a complex situation becomes clearer.

Working with this exercise, do not try to find a single «correct» answer. Your task is to learn to see how changing the order of the cards shifts the focus: in one case, we describe a state or an object; in the other, an event, a problem, or the area in which it manifests. The more often you practice such exercises, the more confidently you will begin to feel the language of Lenormand combinations.

Practical Examples

To reinforce your understanding of how cards function in pair combinations, I would like to present several examples from my own practice. These examples were gathered both during client consultations and from readings I performed for myself. Yes, I do read for myself, and I consider this not only acceptable but an essential part of practice.

Naturally, working with one’s own questions has its particular challenges. The main difficulty lies in maintaining objectivity: at times, there may be a fear of seeing negative cards, while at other times there may be an expectation of only positive outcomes. For this reason, the key condition for a successful self-reading is inner calm and a willingness to accept any answer. This is not easy, but with regular practice it is entirely achievable.

Below is a selection of pair combinations that I found particularly illustrative and interesting. These examples are not united by a single theme and are not intended to provide a deep analysis of any one situation. In most cases, they relate to simple, everyday questions. I deliberately avoid extended interpretations, as two-card combinations are not meant for far-reaching conclusions.

Pairs are most often used for so-called «quick questions,» where a fast and reasonably specific answer is required. I have intentionally not arranged the combinations in the order of the deck. The purpose of this section is not to serve as a reference of fixed meanings, but to train your reading skills. The goal here is, figuratively speaking, to «build your hand.»

I am offering you not ready-made answers, but a tool for finding them. Simply opening the book, locating a similar combination, and mechanically comparing it to your own spread will bring little benefit. What matters far more is understanding the principle of reading and learning to think in the language of the cards. The meanings that emerge in your own readings may differ from the examples given here — and that is entirely normal.

Let us now move on to practice.

1. Rider + Key

Situation. One of my clients practices yoga seriously. One day, partly as a joke, he asked whether I could guess which important exercise he performs every morning. I laid out the cards, and the combination Rider + Key appeared.

Interpretation. The Rider immediately brought to mind legs, movement, joints, and physical activity. The first idea that occurred to me was running. In that case, the Key could have pointed to the importance of this activity. However, I quickly questioned this interpretation: in the context of yoga, running is unlikely to be considered a key or essential exercise.

I then decided to take a closer look at the Key card. Beyond its abstract meanings — importance, significance, solutions — it can also point to very concrete, physical objects: small metal items such as keys, bolts, nuts, or nails. At the moment the word «nails» surfaced in my mind, the meaning of the combination suddenly fell into place.

Legs and movement (Rider), combined with sharp metal objects (Key), could indicate walking or standing on something sharp. For someone seriously practicing yoga, such an exercise seemed far more logical — and indeed more «key» — than ordinary running.

I shared my interpretation and suggested that his morning practice involved some kind of metal objects, possibly sharp ones. The client was genuinely surprised by the accuracy. As it turned out, every morning he spends about an hour standing barefoot on a board covered with nails.

2. Rider + Clover

Situation. A daily reading.

Interpretation. This combination appeared in a daily spread and pointed to a trip (Rider) to a farmers’ market. In this context, the Clover manifested as a symbol of plant-based food and everything associated with simple, natural products. The person for whom the reading was done did indeed go to the market that day and, as it later turned out, was a vegetarian.

Thus, this combination reveals not only an event but also a characteristic of the person. The Rider represents a young man, active and in motion, while the Clover points to food, plants, and everything plant-based. Together, the cards quite accurately described a young vegetarian setting out to buy food.

It is noteworthy that on another occasion, the same market was indicated by the combination Scythe + Clover. In that case, the Scythe manifested as «a man with a scythe,» that is, a farmer or agricultural worker, while the Clover once again represented produce and plant-based food. This is a good example of how the same place or event can be described by different card combinations, depending on the perspective and the context of the question.

3. Clover + Mice

Situation. As often happens, a strong windstorm caused a power outage in my home. The question to the cards was very specific: «How soon will the electricity be restored?»

The question was asked in the morning, and by my internal standard, a positive answer to «soon» would mean within three hours.

Interpretation. In this combination, the Clover primarily indicated a short period of time. Taking into account the number of the card, one could assume that the electricity might be restored within approximately two hours.

However, the Mice card followed the Clover. This card is associated with reduction, loss, deterioration, or the gradual «wearing away» of something. It often also indicates delays, setbacks, and missed timing.

In this case, the Mice seemed to «eat away» at the short time frame (or chance) indicated by the Clover. It is important to note a key point: the time itself does not become shorter — rather, the likelihood of a quick resolution disappears. The short period suggested by the Clover effectively dissolves and loses its relevance.

Thus, in this context, the combination Clover + Mice does not point to a quick resolution but, on the contrary, indicates that expectations of a rapid restoration of electricity will not be fulfilled. The meaning of the Mice as delay is especially clear here.

Conclusion and outcome. According to the spread, the electricity was not going to be restored within the next three hours.

And that is exactly what happened: in reality, the power was restored only the following morning.

4. Rider + Sun

Situation. A daily reading.

Interpretation. At first glance, this combination appears quite straightforward and seems to indicate the receipt of good news: the Rider often symbolizes a message or communication, while the Sun represents joy, success, and a positive outcome. However, in practice, this pair manifested in a very different way.

On that day, the person was engaged in video filming. In this context, Rider + Sun did not point to news, but to a technical process related to photo and video recording. This combination can quite naturally represent a photographer, videographer, camera, or recording equipment, as well as software used for editing images and video.

The Sun in this case very precisely conveyed the image of a flash, a light source, or bright illumination, while the Rider functioned as a symbol of a mechanism in motion, including an electronic device actively in use. In everyday readings, such grounded meanings often prove more accurate than classical interpretations.

In the original spread, there was also a third card — the Mountain. As a result, the person needed significantly more time to record the video material than originally planned. Minor obstacles and delays kept arising. As is well known, the Mountain tends to extend both time and distance, creating a sense of obstruction and difficulty even where everything seems simple.

This example clearly shows how the cards can describe not only an event in the usual sense, but the process itself — its nature, pace, and the conditions under which it unfolds.

5. Rider + Stars

Situation. A quick question was asked about whether a certain person would arrive for a meeting by 19:00. The question was asked at around 18:00.

Interpretation. The answer was positive: the person was indeed going to arrive, and precisely at the appointed time. The Rider indicated that the person was already on the way. The Stars complemented this by pointing to a successful arrival and a favorable outcome. In this context, the Stars manifested as clarity, precision, and the achievement of the intended goal.

The conclusion that the person would arrive specifically at 19:00 was further supported by an additional technique — adding the digits of the Stars card number: 1+6=7, which in this case was correlated with the hour of arrival.

The numerical value of the Rider was not taken into account, as it represented the process and the fact of movement, whereas the Stars related directly to the result and the final point of arrival.

It is important to note that working with numbers in this example was not the primary method of interpretation, but rather a secondary confirmation of an already clear answer. Nevertheless, this case shows that Lenormand cards can provide not only qualitative insights, but also surprisingly precise indications — even down to a specific time.

6. Coffin + Rider

Situation. One day, an anxious businessman called me and urgently asked me to consult the cards to understand why customs had delayed his shipment.

Interpretation. The combination that appeared immediately showed that there was indeed a problem (Coffin) and that it was directly related to the delivery process. In such questions, the Rider often represents couriers, transportation, the shipment of goods, as well as accompanying information related to the delivery.

Based on this, it could be assumed that the cause of the delay was connected either to the delivery itself, the goods, or the documentation and information accompanying the shipment.

In addition to meanings such as loss, interruption, and problems, the Coffin also symbolizes the absence of something necessary. In essence, the Coffin can be seen as a closed box that is empty inside, which gives rise to meanings such as emptiness, lack, or deficiency. For this reason, I concluded that some essential information was missing at customs, without which the clearance process could not be completed.

This was later fully confirmed: the delay occurred due to the absence of a label on the goods.

7. Rider + Ship

Question: How will my business day unfold tomorrow?

Interpretation. In a business context, the Ship most often symbolizes trade, particularly involving foreign partners, international markets, and import–export operations. This card points to expansion, the movement of capital, and processes that extend beyond familiar boundaries.

The Rider, in turn, may represent news, a message, an incoming contact, or the receipt of an order. It often indicates that something is arriving — whether information, an offer, or a concrete action from another party.

In combination, Rider + Ship points to receiving news or proposals related to trade, transportation, or international cooperation. This may take the form of a message from a foreign partner, a new order, an agreement regarding a shipment, or the launch of a new business direction.

Another possible interpretation is the arrival of goods. In this case, the Rider functions as a symbol of delivery or courier service, while the Ship points to transportation and logistics, especially over long distances. Thus, the combination may indicate the movement of goods, the dispatch, or the receipt of a shipment.

8. Rider + Whip (+ Bear)

Question: How will my trip to another city go tomorrow?

Interpretation. The Whip can signify not only conflicts, arguments, or punishment, but also conversations in the form of admonitions, remarks, or sharp discussions. In this spread, the overall tone of events was relatively easy to determine. In this context, the Rider clearly pointed to the car and the journey itself.

Given the Whip’s association with punishment, the first assumption was that the driver might receive a traffic fine. In the original spread, an additional clarifying card — the Bear — was drawn to refine the meaning of the Whip. This is why it is shown here in parentheses: in this chapter, we focus on pair combinations, while the third card serves only as clarification.

In the Lenormand system, the Bear often represents authority figures and enforcement bodies — police, traffic officers, tax authorities, customs, emergency services — in other words, people in uniform. This clarification reinforced the initial assumption of a possible encounter with law enforcement.

However, the events unfolded somewhat differently than expected. The person was driving on a country highway when he was indeed stopped by a traffic officer. In the end, it was only a routine document check. The most telling detail was something else: the officer gave the driver a fairly detailed «lecture» about the importance of driving carefully. It turned out that a car of the same make and color had recently been reported stolen, and a special operation was underway in the area.

Thus, the Whip manifested not as a fine or a conflict, but as a verbal warning and a corrective conversation, while the Bear accurately indicated a representative of authority. This example clearly shows how, even without direct punishment, the combination can manifest through pressure, control, or a disciplinary influence.

9. Rider + Scythe

Question: Today I plan to go to the hairdresser without an appointment. Will the stylist be able to see me?

Interpretation. The answer was negative. The Rider symbolizes movement, initiative, and concrete action. In this case, it pointed to the trip to the hairdresser and the attempt to be seen without an appointment.

The Scythe, however, indicated a sharp interruption of this possibility. In such contexts, the Scythe often represents a sudden refusal, a break, or a situation that is abruptly cut off. Thus, the combination Rider + Scythe suggested that the attempt would be stopped and would not lead to the desired result.

Outcome. In reality, the person did go to the hairdresser, but the stylist was busy and asked him to return in an hour. During that time, urgent work matters arose, and he never made it back that day. The attempt was initiated (Rider) but then abruptly interrupted (Scythe), fully confirming the meaning of the combination.

It is also worth noting that in a different context, Rider + Scythe may indicate a male hairdresser or a professional whose work involves cutting tools. This example once again shows how important it is to consider the question and the situation, rather than relying on a single fixed meaning of a combination.

10. Rider + Anchor

Question: My computer has broken down. What exactly has failed? I have already tried everything, but still cannot determine the cause of the problem.

Interpretation. As mentioned earlier, the Rider can represent mechanical and electronic devices, including a computer. When analyzing equipment failures, I pay particular attention to elements related to movement, transmission, or processing of information. The Rider also symbolizes data flow, signals, and even thought processes — everything that exists in constant «motion.»

The Anchor, in turn, represents fixation, retention, and stability. It stops movement and holds a process in place. In a technical context, this meaning often points to the storage and preservation of information.

Based on the combination of these two cards, I concluded that the problem was related to the component responsible for fixing and storing data. This component is the hard drive, which retains information and ensures its availability to the system.

This was later fully confirmed: the cause of the malfunction was indeed a failed hard drive.

11. Scythe + Clover

Question: Tomorrow we are planning to go to the forest to pick mushrooms. Is it worth going? Will we manage to gather anything?

Interpretation. In addition to meanings related to danger and sudden events, the Scythe can, in certain contexts, symbolize harvesting, especially when it appears in the first position. Such a «harvest» may refer both to material results and to the outcomes of previous actions. At times, however, the Scythe manifests in a very literal sense — as the act of gathering berries, mushrooms, potatoes, and other natural produce.

The Clover points to a connection with the natural, plant-based world, to which mushrooms can symbolically be attributed. It also traditionally represents luck, ease, and a favorable outcome. In this combination, the cards reinforce one another and clearly indicate a successful and, importantly, unexpectedly abundant result.

Based on this, my advice was straightforward: go. Later, the person reported that they had indeed gathered a large quantity of mushrooms — practically «mowing them down,» which perfectly illustrates the direct and vivid manifestation of this combination.

12. Clover + Tower

Question: How will my relationship with my girlfriend develop?

Interpretation. Although the Clover is commonly associated with luck, ease, and favorable outcomes, it also has another important quality — it shortens time frames and points to the temporary nature of a situation. In addition, the Clover can reflect a person’s hopes and expectations.

The Tower, in turn, signifies isolation, restriction, and separation. In relationship readings, it often points to distance, detachment, or the need to withdraw from a situation in which one feels pressure.

In this spread, I had the impression that the querent was either already hoping for the relationship to end or was internally prepared for such an outcome. The combination Clover + Tower clearly suggested an imminent separation. My prediction was not encouraging, but quite definite: the relationship would not last long.

In reality, about a month later, the couple did indeed break up. Notably, the man was even satisfied with the outcome. According to him, his girlfriend had been exerting significant pressure on him, and the separation brought a sense of relief. In this way, despite its apparent «lightness,» the Clover transformed an unpleasant event into a positive outcome for the querent.

This example clearly shows that a favorable card does not always indicate the continuation of a situation; sometimes, it points to a fortunate way out of it.

13. Clouds + Clover

Situation. During a vacation, I decided to find out how long the rain — which threatened to ruin the entire day — would last.

Interpretation. The Clouds in this spread clearly indicated the rain itself and unfavorable weather conditions. The Clover, following it, softened the situation and pointed to its short duration. This suggested that the bad weather would not last long and that the sky would soon clear.

That is exactly what happened: within about an hour, the rain stopped, and I was once again enjoying my time under the gentle rays of the sun.

It is worth noting that the Clover rarely appears in the first position in spreads — at least in my experience. This observation once again reflects its nature: the Clover symbolizes a small, sudden, and fleeting stroke of luck. Temporariness, brevity, and an unexpected favorable turn are its core qualities. Its connection to nature and the plant world is also worth remembering, which in this case proved especially fitting.

14. Ship + Ring

Question: How will my day unfold tomorrow? What will be the main event?

Interpretation. The client chose not to share his plans, so the combination had to be interpreted without prior context. At first, several possible meanings came to mind.

The most obvious interpretation was a sea outing with his family. Since the client lived in Sochi, the Ship could naturally point to travel over water or a boat trip, while the Ring might indicate a spouse or shared time together. However, this version did not feel entirely convincing.

Another possibility was that the Ship referred to a car and the act of traveling itself. In practical questions, the Ship often indicates not only long-distance journeys but movement by transport in general. In that case, the Ring could suggest a round trip — a safe journey there and back — as it symbolizes a closed cycle and a return to the starting point.

This interpretation seemed more plausible. In addition, I was aware of certain circumstances suggesting that the client indeed had a trip ahead. In this context, the Ring also took on the meaning of an obligation — something that had to be done regardless of personal preference.

As it later became clear, the client was planning to travel to Moscow within the next couple of days. Here, the Ship manifested on several levels: as long-distance movement, as the purpose of the trip, and as temporary separation, since he intended to stay there for several months. The journey was to be made by his own car, which once again confirmed the Ship as a symbol of transport.

However, the most revealing detail turned out to be quite mundane. Since this took place in November, and icy conditions were already expected in Moscow, on the very day the question was asked the client had to replace his summer tires with winter ones. This became the main event of the day. In this sense, the Ring manifested quite literally — as a wheel.

This example clearly shows how the cards can describe not an abstract event, but a specific, practical detail of the day, which at the same time is directly connected to a larger process.

15. Key + Ship

Situation. An urgent decision had to be made — whether to go or not.

Interpretation. The Key is one of the most significant cards in the Lenormand system. It can both open and close, granting access to opportunities or, conversely, restricting them. In practical work, however, the Key most often points to opening, resolution, and a favorable outcome.

When the Key appears first in a pair, it typically «opens all doors»: it gives permission to act, removes doubt, and confirms the correctness of the chosen direction. In this position, the Key often predicts success and indicates that the decision is right.

The Ship symbolizes plans, movement, travel, and all forms of transition, both physical and life-related. In this combination, there was little room for doubt: the cards clearly indicated that it was worth going. The Key opened the path, while the Ship reflected the movement itself and the realization of the intention.

At the same time, it is important to understand that if the cards had appeared in reverse order — Ship + Key — the answer would not necessarily have been the opposite. The Key remains a highly positive card even in the second position and, in most cases, still confirms possibility and a successful outcome.

Lenormand cards are not simply a set of fixed interpretations or a mechanical dictionary of meanings. They are a living tool that each practitioner gradually adapts to their own approach. Logic is needed primarily to articulate the meaning of a spread clearly — both for oneself and for the client.

The following examples will demonstrate just how unexpectedly and in how many different ways the Key can manifest in practice.

16. Fish + Key

Situation. The question concerned how successfully a money transfer through an online banking system would proceed.

Interpretation. At first glance, the combination appeared entirely favorable. The Fish clearly pointed to money and financial transactions, while the Key seemed to leave no doubt about a successful outcome.

However, in this case, the Key revealed its less obvious aspect. When it appears at the end of a combination, it can, in rare instances, not open but instead close access. This is exactly what occurred here.

In reality, the person was unable to complete the transfer that day due to a system malfunction in the online banking platform. At the same time, bank staff insisted that everything was functioning correctly on their end, while on his side the situation appeared entirely different. As a result, access to the funds was temporarily blocked, and the transaction had to be postponed.

This example clearly demonstrates that even a highly positive card such as the Key can manifest differently in certain situations — especially when technical or system-related processes are involved. For this reason, when working with Lenormand, it is essential to consider not only the core meanings of the cards, but also their position in the combination and the context of the question.

On the Scythe Card

The Scythe Card

In most cases, the Scythe is regarded as an exclusively negative and dangerous omen. This perception has long been established, and many practitioners do not even consider its alternative manifestations. In my view, this is a mistake. Although the Scythe is indeed a harsh and challenging card by nature, in real-life situations it does not always manifest in a purely negative way. In some cases, its meaning may be neutral, and at times even positive.

It is also important to consider the Scythe as an indicator of timing. This card often points to high speed in unfolding events or to a sudden decision. When it appears, time frames can compress to the point of «already» or «sooner than expected.» I discuss the temporal aspects of this card in more detail in my book Cards of Movement and Time.

1. Example

Let me give a simple example from practice.

Once, while waiting for a guest, I asked the cards whether he would come that day. The Scythe appeared, which initially confused me, as in its classical interpretation it could indicate a disruption of plans or an abrupt ending. However, before I had time to fully reflect on this meaning, the doorbell rang — the guest was already standing at the door, even though I had not expected him so early.

This example clearly illustrates that the Scythe does not always signify loss or danger. Sometimes it points instead to a sudden acceleration of events, when a situation unfolds unexpectedly and much faster than anticipated.

2. Key + Scythe

Situation. This was my own daily reading.

Interpretation. It is important to remember that the Key is not only a card of solutions and access, but also, in a certain sense, a karmic one. It points to the inevitability of events — to the idea that what is meant to happen will unfold regardless. For this reason, the appearance of the Scythe alongside the Key created a subtle sense of inner tension.

The spread manifested by the middle of the day. As is often the case with more tense cards, the situation turned out to be far more mundane than one might initially expect.

My partner urgently needed the phone number (Key) of a courier service, as the courier had failed to make contact at the appointed time. He turned to me for help. At that moment, I assumed that this was how the combination was manifesting: the Scythe as suddenness, and the Key as a solution. Overall, it could be read as an «urgent resolution.»

However, the situation did not end there. Although the phone number was found, it soon became clear that, in order to clarify the situation further, we also needed the order number. To obtain it, we had to contact an office in another city, where the business day had already ended.

As a result, without this information, we were unable to determine the location of the parcel. In this case, the Scythe manifested as a sharp cut-off of access, while the Key appeared as a blocked solution. The possibility of resolving the issue was quite literally «cut off.»

This example clearly shows that even when the Key appears first in a combination, it does not always guarantee immediate access to a solution. Sometimes it simply indicates the existence of crucial information that may, however, be temporarily unavailable.

3. Rider + Scythe

Situation. Will the person arrive for the meeting by 14:30?

Interpretation. This question immediately reminded me of a previously described case involving an unexpectedly early arrival. Based on that experience, I told the querent without hesitation that the person would not only arrive on time, but even 10–15 minutes early. This is exactly what happened.

At first glance, the combination Rider + Scythe may seem alarming — especially when it concerns travel by car. However, in this case there was no reason for concern. The question was not about how the journey would unfold, but about when the person would arrive. With such a formulation, the fact of arrival is already assumed, and the focus shifts entirely to timing.

In this context, the Rider pointed to movement and the journey itself, while the Scythe indicated sudden acceleration and immediacy. Together, they suggested a fast and unexpectedly early arrival.

This example clearly shows that when so-called «negative» combinations appear, one should not immediately assume the worst. It is far more productive to first consider neutral or positive manifestations of the cards and to interpret them strictly within the framework of the question, without being guided by habitual negative associations.

Cards like the Scythe do appear quite frequently, yet in most cases nothing truly dangerous occurs. Lenormand is a subtle tool that requires sensitivity and experience. It is important to learn to distinguish when the cards are genuinely warning of a serious issue and when the sense of concern arises merely from ingrained patterns of thinking. This discernment develops over time through practice.

Staying Within the Scope of the Question

Another essential rule when working with Lenormand cards is to remain strictly within the scope of the question. If the question concerns work, relationships, or any other specific area of life, the cards must be interpreted only within that context. It is important not to project meanings onto the cards that belong to an entirely different theme, even if those meanings seem alarming or dramatic.

Let me give an illustrative example from practice. On one occasion, I was asked how a relationship between two people would develop. The spread produced the cards Tree + Coffin + Cross (Fig. 18).

Fig. 18 Combination Tree + Coffin + Cross

It is well known that the Tree is often associated with health, and that the combination Coffin + Cross is considered one of the most unfavorable in questions related to physical condition and vitality. However, in this case, the question had nothing to do with health, and applying those meanings here would have been a serious mistake.

In the context of romantic or family relationships, this triad is interpreted differently. The combination Tree + Coffin points to a lack of growth and development: the relationship has likely reached a dead end and shows no prospects for strengthening. The combination Coffin + Cross speaks of heavy emotional experiences, inner pain, and suffering that the partners will have to go through.

The Cross, like the symbol itself, often signifies pain and serious trials — not necessarily physical. In relationships, it most commonly manifests as emotional suffering, a sense of hopelessness, or the need to endure a difficult phase.

This example clearly demonstrates how important it is to maintain focus on the question and not to substitute the interpretive context. The cards answer exactly what is being asked, and the practitioner’s task is to hear that answer without adding unnecessary fears or interpretations that are not relevant to the situation.

Let us now return to examples of pair combinations from practice.

4. Dog + Scythe

Situation. An acquaintance sent me a message asking me to call him back urgently. Before returning the call, I decided to lay out the cards to understand what had happened.

Interpretation. I immediately read the combination as indicating suspicion. The Scythe often warns of potential loss, sudden events, or hidden danger, while the Dog symbolizes trust, support, and reliability. In this pairing, there was a clear sense that trust had been disrupted or called into question.

I assumed that my acquaintance either wanted to share his concerns or had encountered a situation in which he might have been deceived. This proved to be the case: at a store, he had been given change in the form of a banknote that seemed suspicious, and he began to doubt its authenticity. Thus, the combination Dog + Scythe manifested as distrust, doubt, and suspicion.

However, the story did not end there. Later, the same person asked whether I could determine, through the cards, if the banknote was counterfeit. In response, the combination Scythe + Bouquet appeared, which I interpreted as «sudden relief» or «unexpected good news.» In this case, the Scythe pointed to a sharp clarification and the elimination of uncertainty, while the Bouquet indicated a positive and favorable outcome.

I told him that the banknote was most likely genuine. He exhaled with visible relief, thanked me, and did not return to the question. For me, this was yet another confirmation of how accurately the cards can capture the essence of a situation, even in such everyday and seemingly minor matters.

5. Fish + Scythe

Situation. An unpleasant situation arose with a client involving a financial dispute. The question was: how will it be resolved?

Interpretation. In this case, what might be called a classic combination appeared. The Scythe, positioned to the right of the Fish, quite literally «cuts off» the money. This placement clearly indicates financial loss and an unfavorable outcome in material terms. From the very beginning of the interpretation, it was evident that the situation would most likely end in losses.

Later, my client reported that his buyer, with whom the conflict had arisen, made a rather strange and poorly considered decision. As a result, both parties lost money. Thus, the cards manifested quite literally: there was a sharp and final cut to the finances.

Interestingly, in a similar situation in the past, I had drawn the reverse combination — Scythe + Fish. In that case, the interpretation was entirely different and carried the opposite meaning. When the Scythe appears first, it can symbolize «harvesting,» while the Fish represents money. Such a combination can be read as «sudden profit» or an unexpected inflow of funds.

This example once again clearly demonstrates how critically important the order of the cards is in pair combinations. The same cards, when reversed, can produce completely opposite outcomes.

6. Crossroads + House

Situation. An acquaintance needed to drive to central Moscow and asked how he would reach the required address.

Interpretation. In such questions, the Crossroads often represents the road itself, the journey, and the presence of multiple route options. It can quite literally indicate an intersection. The card is also associated with searching and decision-making — choosing a direction, a route, or the best way to reach a destination.

In this case, the cards suggested that my acquaintance would encounter moments of choice along the way. Most likely, he would have to navigate between several routes, and the journey would not be as straightforward as expected. It was also possible that the address would not be easy to locate on the first attempt.

The House symbolized the specific building he was heading to. It also carries the meaning of safety and the final destination. My conclusion was that he would ultimately reach the place without problems, but only after making a series of decisions and navigating between different options before finding the correct entrance.

That is exactly what happened. In the end, my acquaintance had difficulty locating the proper entrance and spent about half an hour circling the surrounding streets before finally arriving.

This example clearly shows how Lenormand cards can describe the process of movement in a very literal way, including real-life difficulties along the route, without exaggeration or dramatization.

7. Storks + Clouds

Situation. I needed to meet someone at the airport. Before leaving, I decided to lay out the cards.

Interpretation. The combination Storks + Clouds immediately suggested problems, uncertainty, and lack of clarity (Clouds) related to the arrival of the flight (Storks). I had a distinct sense that something was not quite right and that the meeting itself might be affected. At that moment, however, the official flight schedule showed no changes — everything appeared perfectly normal.

Since I always try to heed the guidance of the Lenormand cards, I chose not to rush to the airport. On the way, I stopped at a nearby gas station and checked the flight status again by phone. As it turned out, the arrival had indeed been delayed by about an hour due to weather conditions.

At that point, the meaning of the combination became clear. The Clouds manifested on two levels: as uncertainty and delay, and as a direct indication of poor weather. The Storks, in this context, clearly referred to the flight and the act of arrival.
