First Job, First Mistake

It was my first day at the small café near the park, and I was both excited and nervous. My name is Alex, I am sixteen, and this is my first real job.

«Hi Alex, I’m Maria,» said the manager, a tall woman with a friendly smile. «I’ll show you around and explain your duties.»

I followed her through the small kitchen and the cozy seating area. «You will take orders, serve coffee, and help clean the tables,» Maria explained. «It’s simple, but attention to details is important.»

At first, everything went well. I remembered the orders, served drinks carefully, and even smiled at the customers. But after two hours, I made my first mistake.

A woman ordered a cappuccino and a croissant. I made the cappuccino correctly but forgot the croissant. She waited and looked at me. «Excuse me, I didn’t get my croissant,» she said politely.

«Oh! I’m so sorry!» I said, rushing to get it. I spilled a little coffee on the counter in my hurry. The woman laughed softly. «It’s okay, don’t worry.»

Maria came over. «Alex, it’s normal to make mistakes, especially on your first day,» she said. «But try to stay calm and double-check orders next time.»

I nodded, feeling a little embarrassed but also relieved.

Later, a group of teenagers came in, talking loudly and joking around. I served their drinks and accidentally gave them the wrong orders. «Here’s your mocha,» I said. They looked confused. «I think that’s my latte,» one of them said.

I apologized again and quickly corrected everything. Maria smiled. «You’re learning fast,» she said. «Don’t worry too much. Every mistake is a lesson.»

By the end of my shift, I was exhausted but proud. I had learned that working with people is not always easy. Some customers are patient, some are not, and sometimes you just have to stay calm and fix your mistakes.

On my way home, I thought about the day. Yes, I had made mistakes, but I had also learned a lot. My first job was not just about earning money — it was about responsibility, patience, and confidence.

And I knew tomorrow I would come back ready to do better.

The Strange Message

It was Thursday evening, and Lena was scrolling through her phone in her room. Suddenly, she received a message from an unknown number:

«Meet me at the old bridge at 8 PM. Don’t tell anyone.»

Lena froze. Who could it be? She didn’t recognize the number.

Her best friend, Sasha, noticed her worried look. «What’s wrong?» he asked.

A Trip Without Parents

Misha had been waiting for this weekend for months. His parents had finally agreed that he could go to Kyiv with his two best friends, Olya and Daniil, without any adults.

«Are you sure we can handle this on our own?» Olya asked nervously as they packed their backpacks.

«Of course! We planned everything. Tickets, hotel, maps… we’re ready,» Misha replied, trying to sound confident.

The train ride was long but exciting. They laughed, listened to music, and looked at the scenery through the window.

When they arrived, the city looked bigger and busier than they imagined. «Wow! It’s amazing!» Daniil said.

The first challenge came when they tried to find their hotel. The directions on Google Maps seemed clear, but the streets were crowded and confusing.

«Maybe we should ask someone,» Olya suggested.

«Good idea,» Misha agreed. They asked a friendly shopkeeper, who gave them exact directions.

After checking in, they went sightseeing. They visited museums, tried local food, and even took a boat tour on the river. Everything was perfect — until they realized it was already late, and they had lost track of time.

«Guys, we need to get back to the hotel before 10 PM,» Misha said.

They hurried through the streets, but Daniil’s wallet fell out of his pocket without anyone noticing. When they discovered it, the hotel was too far to return quickly.

«Oh no! My wallet!» Daniil exclaimed.

Misha stopped for a moment, thinking fast. «Let’s check the streets we walked through. Maybe someone found it.»

Luckily, a street cleaner had found the wallet and left it at a nearby café. They rushed there and got it back.

«That was close,» Olya said, breathing heavily.

«Yes,» Misha replied. «But we managed everything ourselves. No parents, no problems we couldn’t solve.»

The Big Argument

Katya and Misha had been best friends since primary school. But today, something had changed.

It started in the classroom during lunch break.

«Why didn’t you tell me you were joining the basketball team?» Katya asked, trying to keep calm.

«I didn’t think it was a big deal. I just wanted to try it,» Misha replied.

Katya’s face turned red. «Not a big deal? We always do everything together. Now you make plans without me!»

«I’m not trying to leave you out,» Misha said. «I just wanted to try something new.»

«You never ask me anything anymore! You think you can do whatever you want,» Katya shouted.

The argument continued outside the school yard. Other classmates stopped and watched, whispering.

«I don’t understand why you’re so upset,» Misha said, frustrated.

«I’m upset because you don’t care about my feelings!» Katya shouted back.

The two friends stopped walking. They were angry, tired, and sad at the same time.

After a few minutes of silence, Katya sighed. «Maybe I overreacted. I’m just scared you’ll change, and we won’t be friends anymore.»

Misha smiled faintly. «I’m not going anywhere. I just want to grow a little. You can come watch my basketball practice tomorrow if you want.»

Katya smiled too. «I will. And I’ll try not to get so angry next time.»

The main characters are Katya and Misha, best friends.

The argument started because Misha joined the basketball team without telling Katya.

Katya reacted angrily because she felt left out and that Misha didn’t care about her feelings.

Misha explained that he just wanted to try something new and wasn’t trying to leave her out.

They made peace after talking calmly; Katya admitted she overreacted, and Misha reassured her that he wouldn’t change.

The lesson they learned is that friendship can grow even if friends develop new interests; supporting each other is important.

Katya went to the basketball court the next day to watch Misha’s practice.

Katya was worried that Misha’s new activities would change him and their friendship.

Choosing a Future

Nikita sat at his desk staring at the career brochure. College, university, vocational school… there were so many choices.

«I have no idea what I want to do,» he sighed.

His mother peeked in. «Have you thought about what you enjoy?»

«I like computers… but I also love music. And sports. And maybe languages…» Nikita said, overwhelmed.

The next day at school, his teacher, Mr. Petrov, asked the class to write down their dream jobs.

«I want to be a software engineer,» one student said. «I want to be a doctor,» another added.

When it was Nikita’s turn, he hesitated. «I… I’m not sure,» he admitted.

After class, he talked to his friend Alina. «You’re good at so many things. How do you pick just one?»

Alina smiled. «Maybe you don’t have to decide right now. You can try different things before choosing. Life isn’t only one path.»

That evening, Nikita tried coding a small game. It was fun. Then he played guitar for a while and felt happy. Later, he read a short story in English and enjoyed it too.

He realized something important: «I don’t have to decide everything today. I can explore and find what I love the most.»

The Locked Diary

Sofia had never been curious about her older brother’s things… until she found a small, locked diary on his desk.

«What’s this?» she whispered, holding it in her hands. The lock was tiny but strong.

Her brother, Ivan, walked in. «Hey! That’s private,» he said quickly, snatching it.

«I just wanted to see why you’re always smiling or frowning alone,» Sofia replied.

Ivan hesitated. «It’s nothing important. Just some thoughts.»

But Sofia was determined. That night, she tried to remember her mother teaching her about puzzle locks from an old book. After several attempts, the lock clicked open.

Inside, she found pages full of notes, sketches, and dreams. Ivan wrote about wanting to become an artist, about his fears of failing school, and even a secret plan to organize a small art exhibition.

Sofia realized how much she hadn’t known about her brother’s inner world. She decided not to tell anyone she had opened it but instead left it on his desk with a note:

Late Night Call

It was almost midnight when Max’s phone rang. He jumped from the bed — it was an unknown number.

«Hello?» he whispered.

«Max, it’s urgent! Please help me!» a voice said, shaky and scared.

Max recognized the voice immediately. It was his classmate Yulia. «What’s happening? Are you okay?» he asked, concerned.

«I… I locked myself out of my apartment. My keys are inside, and I’m scared,» Yulia replied.

Max grabbed his jacket. «Don’t worry. I’ll come over.»

The streets were empty, and the wind was cold. Max ran to Yulia’s building. When he arrived, he saw Yulia pacing nervously in front of her door.

«It’s okay. I’ll try to pick the lock,» Max said.

After a few tense minutes, the door clicked open. Yulia hugged him. «Thank you so much! I didn’t know what to do.»

Max smiled. «Next time, keep a spare key somewhere safe.»

«I will,» Yulia laughed. «I promise.»

They walked back together, talking quietly about school, friends, and plans. Max realized that sometimes helping a friend isn’t just about big actions — it’s also about being there when it really matters.

The Secret Club

Lena had heard whispers about a secret club at school. Everyone seemed curious, but nobody knew exactly who was in it — or what they did.

One day, she received a small note in her locker: «Meet us in the old library at 4 PM. Bring your ideas.»

Her heart raced. Could she really join?

When she arrived, she saw five students sitting around a table with notebooks and drawings.

«Welcome, Lena,» said Mark, the group leader. «This is the Secret Club. We share projects, ideas, and help each other with creative challenges.»

Lena looked around. She saw sketches, small inventions, and notes on stories and music.

«Sounds amazing,» Lena said. «But… why is it a secret?»

«Some things are better shared quietly,» Mark explained. «It’s about trust and teamwork.»
